Learn Basic French for the Traveler

Though you'll be able to get around Montreal speaking English, it doesn't hurt to learn basic French words and phrases. You never know when they'll come in handy!

Learn Basic French for the Traveler

Many places in Canada speak both French and English. Although it is a very English-friendly country, you may want to learn basic French phrases. Here are a few key words I would consider helpful in many situations you will find yourself in while traveling.

When I travel, I like to walk around the city to see the sights. Inevitably, I'll get lost. In situations like this, it is helpful to be able to introduce yourself and politely figure out where you're going or what is going on.

Bonjour – Hello

Bonsoir  - Good Evening

Je suis perdu – I am lost.

Parlez-vous anglais? - Do you speak English?

Excusez-moi, où est...? – Excuse me, where is...?

Quelle heure est-il? - What is the time?

Merci - Thank you

De rien – You're welcome.

Au Revoir - Goodbye

While it's important to learn basic French, it is also important to know when to use it. I would try to greet or address the locals in French, but unless you speak French well, conversing may be easier on everyone if done in English. Many French-speaking natives may find it frustrating or inappropriate if you try to speak French in the wrong situation or if they cannot understand you. Especially in Canada, English is very prominent and it may better serve you to speak English instead of attempting broken French. So just stick with the basic French phrases, and you should be fine!
