Top Things to Do in Montreal

Jan 14 , 2011

From enjoying the majestic beauty of the canal and mountains to browsing the hippest, to-die-for shops, don't miss these top things to do in Montreal.

If you're thinking about making a trip to Montreal, or you're already here and you want to find out what you can't miss while here, here are the top things to do in Montreal. From museums to natural attractions and everything in between, you are sure to find many interesting things to see and do in this European-inspired city.

The Outdoors and Architecture

Montreal is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and architecture. Nature lovers will want to paddle down or bike along the Lachine Canal, which offers nearly 9 miles of paths and waterways. There's also Mount Royal, Montreal's iconic mountain landmark. Climb to its summit for a jaw-dropping view of the city. Visit the Montreal Biodome nature complex to really get in touch with Mother Nature; the complex also houses a planetarium and a lush botanical garden.

Architecture enthusiasts won't want to miss Olympic Stadium, which was the site of the 1976 Olympic Games. And Old Montreal, in the downtown area, is a tourist favorite that features beautiful historical buildings housing shops, restaurants, and hotels. Whether you've been here once or more times than you can count, exploring Montreal is one of the top things to do in Montreal. Finally, guests will want to step inside the Montreal Casino and, if they're not going to play hand, admire the builder's handiwork. Whether you're the betting type or not, its architecture (it's built in two of the pavilions used for the 1967 World's Fair) is truly a sight to behold.

Shopping

Visitors interested in shopping shouldn't miss the Jean-Talon Market. It is a favorite among locals and a great way to get a taste of the city's true way of life. To combine shopping and people watching, head to Saint-Denis Street, which is home to hundreds of shops and restaurants frequented by the city's beautiful and fashionable demographic. If you find yourself here in the winter months, you're not likely to want to spend too much time shopping outside. Instead, take refuge in the Underground City, which is a twelve-kilometer section of Montreal beneath the downtown area. It is at its best during the wintertime and then, is one of the top things to do in Montreal for locals and visitors alike. The Underground City is an extremely popular destination, and hundreds of thousands of tourists come each year to shop and eat.

Museums and Galleries

Montreal is also home to great museums and the arts, which can be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone. The Museum of Contemporary Art houses more than 7,000 pieces, most of which have been created by Canadians. If you can, come on a Wednesday when the museum offers free guided tours. Additionally, there's the Museum of Fine Arts. It is home to more than 30,000 pieces of art from a broad spectrum of styles and media. If you find yourself here in June or July, don't miss the International Jazz Festival and its 500-plus concerts.
